Welcome to the Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon!
|
Chartered in the fall of 1846, Sigma is the fifth oldest chapter of the DKE fraternity and continues to remain a flagship chapter, upholding traditions set in place by the founders. In the words of one founder: "The candidate most favored was he who combined in the most equal proportions the gentleman, the scholar, and the jolly good fellow," an ideal which still remains. We welcome you to explore this website in order to gain further insight into what we're all about. Unfortunately, a lot of today's fraternities have become homogenous on one of several fronts, be they athletic, socio-economic, racial, or political. Though any of those types of homogeneity provide a comfortable and familiar atmosphere for its members, ultimately they comprise weaker bonds of brotherhood. The Sigma Chapter embraces the concept of diversity in a variety of ways: we don't play on the same sports team, we don't major in the same fields, we don't necessarily enjoy the same activities. Though our diversity reflects and somewhat defines our very strong and unique bond, words do not exist that can accurately portray the depth, character, and experience of the brotherhood we share. What makes the Sigma Chapter of DKE truly special is that we personify the last clause in Article II of the DKE constitution: "The union of stout hearts and kindred interests to secure to merit its due reward." DKE is not for everyone, but for those fortunate enough to enter into our fellowship at Amherst, DKE serves as one of their most fruitful, enjoyable, and worthwhile experiences. |
